OSISOFT has been recognized by CIO Applications Magazine as the exclusive recipient of “Top 10 Esri Solution Companies - 2019,” based on our proprietary methodology, reflecting its position in the industry, and is also named among “,” reflecting its broader leadership. This profile has been developed by the CIO Applications research and editorial team based on insights from an interview with Dr. J. Patrick Kennedy, Founder & CEO.
Dr. J. Patrick Kennedy, Founder & CEOForming the foundation of operational intelligence, data presents endless opportunities to leverage information that delivers actionable insights into the physical infrastructure, assets and processes. While industries are on the perils of failing to operate as a data-driven, intelligent enterprise, the question is how does an enterprise build operational intelligence?
Look no further! A proven leader in operational intelligence, OSIsoft is dedicated to helping people transform their world through data. The company was born to enable seamless operational intelligence and business transformation through the open architecture and cost-effective scalability of its product - the PI System. While businesses look for actionable customer insights, faster product innovation, and disruptive business models, their search for these three interdependent ingredients ends with OSIsoft.
Be it accessing insights for just one asset or system or the entire enterprise, a point-solution such as the PI System does the entire heavy-lifting of collecting data by centralizing data silos. It provides one version of the truth and enables data governance, data context and accessibility to operational data from all of the assets—stationary and mobile assets that generate data like temperature, pressure, and voltage every second of every day—across the enterprise. Empowered with the PI System, users can enable real-time decision-making, generate insights into the future and confident recommendations for operational efficiency.
"OSIsoft has developed the PI Integrator for Esri ArcGIS that brings client’s maps to life by combining visualization and geo-analytics with real-time IoT data"
Governed by the mission to transform industrial operations, OSI soft serves clients across manufacturing, energy, utilities, pharmaceuticals, life sciences, data centers, facilities and the process industries, as well as the public sector and the federal government.
Beyond Operational To Enterprise Intelligence
In an ambitious bid to help clients access, manage, optimize and contextualize heaps of data, the PI System builds a data infrastructure that connects data from the physical infrastructure to the people that drive operations. This allows transforming reactive operation in enterprises to data-driven operational intelligence by delivering the right data to the right people in the organization at the right time.
With an aim to connect operations—driven by production KPIs— to the business revenue and profitability, the PI System combines enterprise operations data with business data to bring in transparency to understand and make impactful decisions regarding operational costs, value and return.
Since the beginning, the company has set its sights on enabling business transformation by delivering greater value into the enterprise
With the PI System, enterprises can accurately identify how and where to improve operations. This is where a key data point of the assets comes into the picture—location. While data is scattered among different incompatible systems, formats and processes, the OSIsoft’s data infrastructure seamlessly collects, analyzes, visualizes and shares large amounts of high-fidelity, time-series data from multiple sources to people and systems across all operations. OSIsoft also brings in advanced integrations for operational data to be used in combination with advanced analytics platforms, relational databases, or business intelligence tools to streamline reporting, find never-before-seen correlations, predict events in the process, and more. OSIsoft has partnered with Esri, an industry leader in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology, to deliver a new capability that brings space and time together. OSIsoft has developed the PI Integrator for Esri ArcGIS that brings client’s maps to life by combining visualization and geo-analytics with real-time IoT data.
As more people demand access to geospatial data and the ability to look at the map and data simultaneously, the PI Integrator is precisely what they need. With the PI Integrator, users can gain new levels of understanding and accomplish a holistic view for analysis, and real-time situational awareness. The integrator also mitigates the need to invest time juggling with multiple applications to access geospatial data about the assets. The asset data being collected, analyzed, and viewed on the PI System is easily put on the map with the PI Integrator by combining the visualization and geoanalytics of the Esri ArcGIS® platform with the real-time data infrastructure. While data can be real-time and historical data can be viewed in a geospatial context, enterprises can access up-to-the-moment status information of operations and infrastructure for situational awareness.
With the OSIsoft-Esri solution, maintenance engineers and coordinators can monitor the enterprise assets, and take action on alarms and notifications using map-based navigation. They can also build maintenance schedules by leveraging filtered views of the assets on a map. From average flow rate to average temperature, OSIsoft-Esri solution empowers engineers and planners with valuable support information. When it comes to managing and maintaining filed assets, technicians can receive real-time proximity alerts with the solution. The PI Integrator for Esri ArcGIS enables operation engineers and analysts to compare operating conditions across geography and through time.

With OSIsoft-Esri solution, environmental health and safety teams can proactively define a safety boundary around assets and improve efficiency by identifying who or what might be at risk. Key performance indicators of production values, risk profiles, or market data can be seamlessly accessed with simplified aggregate and roll-up calculations.
The prowess of Esri ArcGIS geographical mapping software and the OSIsoft PI System’s data capabilities was PJM Interconnection, operator of the largest electric grid in the US, leveraged the partnership for increasing situational awareness for operators and improve business performance.
PJM implemented the DIMA application developed using the interface between the OSIsoft PI System and Esri ArcGIS geographical information system to allows control center dispatcher to make the most informed decisions. Integrating huge volumes of information across a large geographical area from multiple systems using the existing tools was a daunting task for the client.
To overcome this challenge, PJM integrated data from the PI System with the Esri ArcGIS for geographic intelligence using OSIsoft’s PI Integrator for Esri ArcGIS product and HTML 5 for the user interface. The integrator also ties data from other databases to the PI System, geographically displaying data for the entire territory. With this holistic view, operators and dispatchers attain a better understanding of the state of the grid in each area at any time in real time, improving their situational awareness.
That’s not all; SDG&E employs PI Integrator for Esri ArcGIS in many power distribution scenarios, while White House Utility District avoiding $15 to $20 mn capital expansion by locating and repairing leaks in their fresh water distribution system with the PI Integrator. It also assists Peak Reliability, the grid reliability coordinator in the Western U.S., to increase electric grid reliability, with 400,000 data streams updated every 10 seconds. PI Integrator for Esri ArcGIS is also part of the real-time energy management platform at NASA Langley Research Center.
The benefits of the PI System and PI Integrator are countless. However, from a broad perspective, the PI System has ushered in reduced costs, opened new revenue streams, extended equipment life, increased production capacity, and more for its users. The system can connect to more than 450 interfaces and collect high-frequency data from multiple formats, standards or conventions across multiple systems or sources. Besides translating high-quality, high-fidelity data into a uniform structure, the PI System’s visualization capability enables proactive decision making. Commitment and focus to enterprise-wide interoperability across multiple systems along with OSIsoft’s unreserved hands-on service and support from engineers empowers organizations with an infrastructure for rapid success with a low risk of failure.
